Check My Live Location on Mountains
Dear Traders,
I am writing this newsletter from a hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal, where I am waiting for my China visa to arrive. This week, Brian and Thor have been trading live in chatroom and YouTube, and Iâve been watching them closely.
Brian executed an amazing long trade on NVDA today, which I also took, but unfortunately, I couldnât share it. My Wi-Fi and internet connection are just too slow to stream or share trades right now, and I also think itâs time to replace my laptop.
If all goes well, I will be entering Tibet on September 13 and moving toward the Cho Oyu base camp. If the weather permits and my body acclimates well, I may aim for a summit push near the end of September. I will also activate my InReach GPS tracking when Iâm near areas with no connection, and you can follow my progress here.
Iâve heard thereâs going to be good coverage up to base camp, and only above base camp will we need GPS messaging and have no internet. I may still be online for a bit before I need to communicate with friends and family via satellite messaging. It really motivates me to know youâre checking my progress at the link above when itâs activated.
This week has two big events. One of them was Apple revealing its new AI-enhanced iPhone 16 lineup, with support for what itâs calling âApple Intelligence.â The AI integrations could represent the biggest overhaul to the iPhoneâs software in years â yet the company is likely to withhold its best add-ons from users not running the newest hardware, meaning you need to buy the new iPhone if you want to access it. This is somewhat unusual, given Apple has the industryâs best track record of delivering its latest software to older devices â some even five years or more after their initial release.
In other words, youâve got to pay to play.
Appleâs justification is that it sees AI as a hardware-enhanced feature and older phones are just not built for AI-assisted Siri. Simply put, the heavy lifting is done on the devices themselves, rather than in a powerful but distant data center.
According to Apple, having parts of Siriâs AI brain implanted inside the iPhone is vital for maintaining data security and giving users peace of mind. However, the reality is that most AI features these days only require an internet connection to use, rather than an onboard, AI-geared chipset.
So long as you have decent Wi-Fi or cell reception, you can access the latest machine-learning models from OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Xâs Grok. But we shouldnât forget Appleâs mission to sell hundreds of millions of new iPhones every year.
As an iPhone user myself, the question is whether unique but inevitably limited hardware-enhanced AI features are worth the price of a whole new smartphone. Apple has indicated that Apple Intelligence will only be compatible with the iPhone 15 and above.
Another important event is Wednesdayâs CPI (Consumer Price Index) or inflation report. Next week, the Fed will begin its two-day meeting, where itâs widely expected to start an interest rate-cut cycle. We donât yet know whether theyâll cut by 25 or 50 basis points, but the market is leaning towards 25. The difference between 25 and 50 isnât huge. A 50-basis-point cut would show the Fed is serious about not letting the labor market deteriorate further, while 25 would align more with institutional inertia â that aggressive cuts are reserved for crises, which weâre not in right now.
Regardless, Wednesdayâs CPI number can create volatility, which is amazing for us traders.
