Reinventing Yourself: Why It’s More Important Than Ever

But today, something small and unexpected reminded me of just how important it is to keep reinventing yourself in life. I needed to grab a few last-minute stationery items and small gift packages I’m preparing. A friend told me there’s still a Staples open in downtown Vancouver, so I went there. The store was big, one of the busiest locations downtown, but it felt empty. Not just quiet. Empty.
At the checkout, I realized I forgot “Post-it” notes and told the cashier, a kind man in his 50s, “Give me a second, I’ll be right back.” He smiled and said, “I can give you a thousand minutes.”
When I came back and apologized, he said, “No worries at all, thank you for coming. Look around. No one’s here anymore. We already closed one location, and it’s just a matter of time before this one goes too. Everyone shops online now. It’s only a matter of time before I lose my job.”
I told him I hoped that wouldn’t happen, and there’s still room for in-person retail. He smiled again and said, “Maybe. But at least I’ll die with dignity.”
We laughed, said goodbye, and I walked away. But his words stuck with me. He was clearly a capable man, probably spent his entire career in retail. And now, he could already see the funeral of his job unfolding right in front of him.
That moment got me thinking about my own life.
I came to Canada from Iran with almost nothing. I got a PhD, built a life, and eventually lost the job I had worked so hard for. The universe doesn’t owe us anything. I had to find a way to reinvent myself, not just financially, but mentally.
And then again, after 12 years of a happy marriage, I suddenly had to go through a divorce. I lost half of everything emotionally, financially, and mentally, and had to rebuild. It was a dark time, and it took everything I had to come back from that.
I’ve even had trading losses that were bigger than my divorce.
But what brought me back each time was the same thing: learning, evolving, and choosing to reinvent myself. That’s the heart of resilience, and it’s something I want every trader to feel empowered to do, too.
